About the Department

The physiotherapy service serves the population in the areas surrounding Ashford and St Peters Foundation NHS trust, for both in patient and out patient care.

The aim of physiotherapy is to assist patients of all ages in identifying and maximising their movement potential and improving their quality of life.

We have a variety of in patient teams including respiratory/medical, surgical, orthopaedic, neurological and paediatric teams, who cover all acute admissions at the St Peters site, and offer quality post-operative and rehabilitation services at the Ashford hospital site.

The teams cover all wards and will accept referrals for any patients who require assessment and treatment to optimise their function, mobility or condition. This is to ensure patients receive appropriate treatment to aid in their physical recovery and safe discharge home.

We have out patient teams across both sites which can be accessed by consultant specialist clinics or direct GP referral. The out patient teams offer quality assessment and treatment of a variety of neuro-musckuloskeletal (paediatric, womens health and adult), conditions with view to aiding rehabilitation, injury prevention, promoting health and wellbeing and general functional improvement. To best progress our treatment we place an important emphasis on self-management. Exercise classes and hydrotherapy sessions are offered to help patients integrate exercise into their daily lives.

Both sites also use their gymnasium space to run specialist rehabilitation classes for people following cardiac disease, respiratory problems and amputations.

Changes to Outpatient Physiotherapy Services at St Peter’s

We are changing and improving the way we provide outpatient physiotherapy sessions, including gym based classes and hydrotherapy services at St Peter’s. From 30th July 2019, we will be relocating these services to The River Bourne Club in Chertsey, where we will have access to modern, state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

This will offer several benefits. Primarily, it will enable us to provide a better service as some of the facilities and equipment we currently use at St Peter’s are in need of modernisation, particularly the hydrotherapy pool. The River Bourne Club will provide much better changing and exercise facilities and a nicer environment for patients during their sessions.

It is also anticipated that providing rehabilitation in a gym environment will inspire patients to be more active and continue to be active after their course of treatment has ended. “Demedicalising” the environment is in line with the biopsychosocial approach of the Surrey iMSK service.

At the same time we can reallocate and remodel the space on the St Peter’s site currently occupied by these facilities to create much needed ward space. More information on this will follow in the coming weeks.

We have written to all patients affected by these changes and included a set of FAQs which you can access here for information. All queries should be directed to the Physiotherapy team on 01932 722547.
