As part of this year’s HealthCare Science Week (HCS), Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH) is holding a ‘Showcase Day’ designed to give an insight into the role science plays in the NHS and the Trust.

A day-long event is planned for Wednesday 15 March which will include information from a range of science specialties including Anorectal Physiology, Cardiology, Gastrointestinal Physiology, Neurophysiology and Respiratory Physiology to name a few.

Visitors can expect to take part in a range of activities including interactive stands, pop-up labs and dummy tests as well as hear talks from science leads about their roles & responsibilities, career advice and opportunities in the science arena.

Year 10 and 11 students taking science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects from nearby Sir William Perkins School have also been invited to spend the morning in one of our healthcare science departments. They will get to experience healthcare scientist roles first hand and get a glimpse of work in a scientific setting.

HCS Week is an opportunity for healthcare science professionals to educate and inspire the scientific workforce of the future. It also enables the current workforce and local community to learn about what scientists do and the vital role they play in patient care and treatment.

Dr David Fluck, ASPH’s Medical Director said: “The role science plays in healthcare should never be understated. Science permeates everything we do at our hospitals and greatly influences patient pathways. We are delighted to be supporting the week as it gives us an opportunity to show exactly where and how science influences a range of our clinical disciplines and affords us the opportunity to encourage colleagues and members of our local community to take explore a more meaningful understanding of science in the NHS”.

Sandra Chinyere, ASPH’s Clinical Service Manager for Neurophysiology and Showcase organiser said: “I’m delighted we are hosting this event this year. It’s a great opportunity for us to bring science to the fore and celebrate the significance it plays in our healthcare story. This event will also encourage uptake of STEM subjects and inspire the next generation of healthcare scientists in the NHS and is the first of what we plan to be an annual event on the ASPH calendar involving more schools”.

The Showcase Day takes place between 9am and 4pm in the Clinical Neurophysiology Department, St Peter’s Hospital.
