The Breast Care App

Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has two quality improvement projects shortlisted for the 2017 National Patient Experience Network Awards (PEN).

The PEN National Awards are the first patient experience awards in the UK, celebrating the delivery of outstanding patient experience by those involved in the health and social care industry.

A Breast Care mobile app developed for patients, led by Mr Manish Kothari, Louisa Daly, former Head of Patient Experience and the Breast Care team has been shortlisted in the Innovative Use of Technology/Social Media category. The app provides essential information about breast care for patients at Ashford and St. Peter’s and was developed following a project last year, which saw the breast care team working closely with patients to assess the service – identifying what worked well and what could be improved.

An ‘Adopt a Grandparent’ scheme, led by Dr Chris Marsh and Sangeeta Singadia in the Patient Experience Team has been shortlisted in two categories - Personalisation of Care and Staff Engagement/Improving Staff Experience. The scheme brings non clinical staff into contact with older aged patients to provide them with social interaction and communication.

Chief Executive at the Trust, Suzanne Rankin, enthused: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this prestigious national award. To be picked is testament to the continuing commitment and skills of our staff, who go above and beyond every day to provide the best possible care to our patients. Well done to everyone involved.”

Winners will be announced at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on 27 March. For more information about the awards, please visit http://patientexperiencenetwork.org/awards/.
