Volunteer force gives St. Peter’s Hospital gardens a makeover

A large group of volunteers in bright red T shirts have given the Abbey Wing Courtyard and other gardens at St. Peter’s Hospital a fantastic makeover, today Friday 12th October.

The volunteer day is kindly supported by Lilly UK, who have given their help today in recognition of the benefits that hospital gardens bring to patients, families and carers.

Chairman of Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Aileen McLeish said, “We are so grateful to Lilly UK’s generous volunteers, who have given up a whole day to work on our gardens for the benefit of our patients. Gardens can help to reduce stress for patients and their relatives by providing opportunities to spend time in a pleasant and relaxing environment, with calming natural views and fresh air.”

The volunteers spent time clearing and tidying the gardens, digging, jet washing and painting and varnishing, to make the gardens even lovelier than they were before.

Said Hellen Joly of Lilly UK: “Through our Hearts and Hands programme our volunteers give their time, talent, and passion to make a difference to people in our local community. I am delighted that we have been able to give our support in this way to St. Peter’s Hospital, which we know will make a real difference to many patients and relatives visiting the hospital.”
