Listening to the Views of Mothers
Written by Maternity Team

The MSLC will advise the PCT commissioning maternity care and other commissioners on all aspects of maternity services provided for its residents, including:

  • Overall direction and strategy for the maternity service
  • Progress on implementing the standards and recommendations of the Children’s National Service Framework in the area
  • Lessons from investigations and reviews of maternity services by the Healthcare Commission
  • Public and Patient involvement
  • Quality standards for maternity services and ways of monitoring standards
  • Clinical Governance, audit and guidelines for clinical care
  • The consistency in the delivery of maternity services and clinical practice across the district, based on reliable research evidence

Specifically:

  • To offer all women equal access to the care and information provided by the maternity services
  • To agree a programme of work each year
  • To consider proposals for development and change to the service
  • To independently monitor users comments and complaints about the service and their resolution
  • To carry out further research on specific areas in order to make recommendations for improvement
  • To provide user views on policies and guidelines prior to their introduction
  • To provide information to service users in an appropriate format where possible
  • To ensure all patient information leaflets are reviewed by users of the service
  • To produce an annual report

To ensure that the providers of maternity services listen to the views and experiences of the women using those services and that those views are taken into account.
