What is Critical Care?
Critical Care comprises of 9 Intensive Care beds at St Peter’s Hospital. This facility provides 24 hour care for eight level 3 and one level 2 beds.
Critical Care also supports the Outreach Service, providing cover out of hours for level 1 and 2 patients in the ward environment and offering advice to ward staff.

Critical Care Outreach Service
Established since 2001, this 24 hour multidisciplinary team is lead by Dr Barry Sellick and Ingrid Johnson (Critical Care Specialist Nurse).
The aims are to:
· Improve the care of patients at ward level who’s condition has deteriorated
· Share critical care skills with ward staff
· Promote continuity of care between critical care and ward areas
The latter has been achieved by:
· Implementation of 24 hour Outreach Service
· Development of acute skills and AIM study days
· Avert admissions to critical care beds
Clinical Practice Educators
Anil Jaggernath is the clinical practice educator for Critical Care. He is responsible for education, training and practice development within the directorate.
All staff members are facilitated and encouraged to participate in reviewing critical care practice and produce evidence based policies and procedures.
Surrey Wide Critical Care Network SWCCN
What is the Network?
A comprehensive critical care review by the Department of Health recommended that groups of hospitals within geographical areas formed networks (larger groups) in an attempt to provide consistent and auditable care for clients within those areas.
Ashford and St Peter’s joined together with Guildford, Frimley Park and East Surrey and Sussex to form the Surrey Wide Critical Care Network, led by Jackie Huddleston.
Network Projects
· Collecting accurate and relevant data on performance of Critical Care Units and Outreach services
· Providing a network respiratory weaning co-ordinator (Debbie Field) to assist with difficult to wean patients
· Ventilator Care Bundles
· Spinal Injury Care Bundle
· Transfer of critically ill patients within the network
Audit and Risk
Audits in progress or completed include:
· We have just taken part in the Trust wide Communication audit
· The yearly documentation audit is completed
· Relatives questionnaire is completed
· Xigris in progress
