With over four thousand babies born a year, the maternity department at St Peter’s Hospital is always busy. However, between the 9th and 10th January the team was particularly hectic with the unusual arrival of four sets of twins! Sandra Houston, who joined St Peter’s as Head of Midwifery in July 2011, said: “We see many sets of twins and even triplets delivered every year, but the arrival of four sets of twins in a 24 hour period is extraordinary. In fact, even our longer serving members of staff can’t recall it ever happening before.” Left to right: Matron Alison Howker, Rebecca Parsons, neonatal nurse, Mr & Mrs Salmon from Woking with their twin boys (unnamed as yet); Mr and Mrs Sandhu from Bedfont with their twins (a girl and boy as yet unnamed); Mr and Mrs Davies from Addlestone with their daughter Brooke and son Blake, Chantelle Teader, neonatal nurse and Sandra Houston, Head of Midwifery. The delivery of twins can often be more complicated than the birth of one baby, but unusually all four sets of twins arrived without a caesarean section. Sandra said: “We provide specialist obstetric care and dedicated parent education classes at St Peter’s for women with multiple babies.” In recognition of this, the maternity unit is the first in the country to gain two Gold TAMBA (Twins and Multiple Births Association) Maternity Excellence Awards in recent years. Sandra added: “I would like to congratulate all the parents on their new arrivals and also thank my team for the excellent care they provide. I’ve only been in post for five months but can genuinely say that St Peter’s is a friendly and exciting place to work. More and more local women are choosing to have their baby here and there are some great opportunities for midwives looking to join the team.” |
